After a couple of years of use it's not unusual for keys to break. If your key breaks inside the lock, you will have to replace it. If the rest of the lock's key is in good shape, you may be able repair it.

A paperclip works well to hold the broken piece on both sides and force it out. If it's not too far within the lock, you could also try using a pair of pliers. If it's broken close to the lock, you may need a tool called a "key extractor" that has bars with a barb similar to screws. The bar is put into the locking mechanism, and then twisted to dig the barb into it. This will allow you to remove the key.

Another reason for the fob to cease working is that the buttons are been worn out. When you press the button on your fob, the contacts send coded messages to the receiver in your car which communicates what action you would like the key to do. If these contacts are worn out or damaged, pressing the button could not function properly or it will send different messages than what you were hoping for.

You can solve this issue quickly by using a physical car key to open your doors or start your engine. You can reset the fob by following the instructions in your car's owner's manual (check online to find instructions for your specific model).
